If you’ve ever looked for an apartment then you know, it’s not always the easiest process. Since we know the business of apartment hunting so well, we’ve come up with a few tips help you find the perfect place to call home.

  1. Determine exactly what you want in an apartment. Before you even start your search, take a moment to write down all of the things you want in an ideal apartment. Make a list of amenities that are “must haves” and ones that you’re willing to compromise on.

  2. It’s never too early to start looking. If you know that you’re planning to move into a new apartment at some point in the next year, it helps to get a head start. In your free time, start searching the area you want to move to and see what complexes seem to best suit your lifestyle. If you fall in love with a highly sought-after property, there may be a long waitlist, but if you form a relationship with leasing agents way before your current lease ends, you’ll have a much better chance of actually getting into an apartment when you need one.

  3. Always tour an apartment before signing the lease. Pictures and videos can give you a good idea of what the living space looks like, but you’ll want to physically see the apartment before signing a lease. Leases are legally binding contracts and can often be expensive to get out of, so, you want to make sure that you find the right fit. Starting your search early also allows for more time to tour more apartments, increasing your chances of finding the perfect place to call home.

  4. Be honest about your budget. Don’t go looking for an apartment you can’t afford. As a general rule, your housing costs should be no more than 30% of your take home income. Make sure you also budget for any extra costs associated with the apartment including utilities.
